Media Release Senior Appointment

The Reserve Bank of Australia today announced the appointment of Dr Guy Debelle as Assistant Governor (Financial Markets). This role oversees the Bank's operations in both domestic and international financial markets and is responsible for policy advice to the Governors and the Board on all matters relating to financial markets. The position, which became vacant on the appointment of Ric Battellino as Deputy Governor, attracted a strong field of applicants from both inside and outside the Bank.

Dr Debelle holds a Bachelors Degree in Economics, with first class honours, from the University of Adelaide, and a PhD in Economics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He has extensive experience, covering almost 20 years, in public policy formulation in the fields of economics and financial markets. In addition to the Reserve Bank, his work experience includes the Australian Treasury, the International Monetary Fund, the Bank for International Settlements and as a Visiting Professor at MIT. Most recently, Dr Debelle was Head of the Bank's International Department and, before that, Head of its Economic Analysis Department. Dr Debelle has a strong record of published research in a range of fields related to monetary policy and financial markets, including influential work on inflation and inflation targeting.

Dr Debelle will take up duties today.
