Preliminary estimates for August indicate that the index increased by 1.5 per cent (on a monthly average basis) in SDR terms, after increasing by 3.9 per cent in July (revised). The increase was led by the prices of the bulk commodities. Both the base metals and rural subindices declined in the month. In Australian dollar terms, the index rose by 0.8 per cent in August.

Over the past year, the index has increased by 0.8 per cent in SDR terms. The index has declined by 3.8 per cent in Australian dollar terms.

Using spot prices for the bulk commodities, the index rose by 4.2 per cent in August in SDR terms, to be 8.8 per cent higher over the past year.
